Abstract:

The paper discusses the system of verbal forms of the Shapsug dialect of Adyghe (Western branch of the North-Caucasian language family) expressing the semantics of «discontinuous past» (pluperfect). A detailed study of the semantics of the pluperfect forms in both temporal and atemporal uses is presented. From the typological point of view, the Shapsug system is non-trivial in that it distinguishes between perfective, imperfective, and irrealis types of pluperfect.
