Guidelines for contributors

1. Authors submitting articles to Voprosy Jazykoznanija should follow the publication rules. See Publication ethics.

2. Submissions should be sent via the Journal’s editorial system. To submit a manuscript, please register and fill in the article submission form.

3. It is recommended to enclose non-standard fonts and illustrations, if there are any.

4. The author’s details should not appear in the document itself as well as its properties (as far as possible, the authors should not be identifiable from references and acknowledgements; the latter should be provided in a separate file).

5. Manuscripts in Russian and English are accepted; the text should follow the norms and spelling conventions of the literary language and, if necessary, should be checked by a native speaker before submission.

6. Any materials that have been previously published or sent to the editorial offices of other journals will not be accepted as well as materials that lie outside the scope of the relevant topics of the journal or do not satisfy the Basic rules of the text layout.

7. When a review is submitted, the editorial office may request a copy of the reviewed book (the book may be later returned to the reviewers).

8. The authors of an article which was accepted for publication must also provide a signed copyright transfer agreement (after the decision of the editorial board).

1. All materials submitted to the editorial office are selected on the basis of anonymous (double-blind) independent peer review process and the decision of the editorial board of the journal.

2. Submitted materials that correspond to the relevant topics of the journal are generally reviewed within three months from the date of submission. The authors are notified of the dates of the next meeting of the editorial board.

3. All publications are free of charge for the authors.

4. The editorial board makes a decision (to approve, to reject, to revise and resubmit) based on the reviewers’ comments. The decision of the editorial board and the reviews are sent to the authors in electronic form.

5. In case of “revise and resubmit” decision, the revised version undergoes a new round of reviewing and is accepted for publication if the previous shortcomings are eliminated.

6. Accepted materials are generally published within six months from the date of acceptance.

7. Upon publication, the authors receive an offprint of their publication (in electronic form only).

This Publication Ethics is based on the proceedings of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

1. Authorship of the Paper

1.1. The manuscript is provided by the authors to the editorial office of Voprosy Jazykoznanija journal along with the information about themselves. The article should be submitted for the publication for the first time and cannot be published previously in another edition or submitted elsewhere for publication. The study on the basis of which the article is written must be original and new.

1.2. Publication of unreliable information as well as plagiarism – i.e., appropriation and submission of another person’s work under one’s name, copying its parts without reference to the source, rephrasing significant parts of such work without reference, or claiming copyright on the results of another person’s research – is strictly forbidden. The editorial board of Voprosy Jazykoznanija may check the text with the Russian-language plagiarism detection software Antiplagiat. If plagiarism is identified, the COPE guidelines on plagiarism will be followed.

1.3. The author reports on the financial support in conducting the research, renders thanks to all who contributed to writing of the article (including participation in preparatory studies).

1.4. Authorship must be limited to those who have made a significant contribution to the concept, design, execution, or interpretation of the reported study. The corresponding author must ensure that all appropriate co-authors have seen and approved the final version of the paper and have agreed to its submission for publication.

2. Authors and their responsibility

2.1. The authors undertake to cooperate with the editorial board of the journal: to make changes, eliminate errors at the request of the editorial board; if the authors notice any errors in the article submitted for review, it is necessary to take measures for their prompt correction.

2.2. The authors guarantee correctness of the references and quotations, availability of all necessary permits to the results used in the article, facts and other borrowed materials, the copyright of which doesn’t belong to them.

2.3. If the editorial board of the journal decides to publish an article (review, survey), the authors enter into a contract on the transfer of copyright to the Russian Academy of Sciences while reserving the right to non-commercial use of the published material (placement on the website of the author or the employer).

3. Reviewers and their responsibility

3.1. The editorial office of Voprosy Jazykoznanija journal accepts papers corresponding to the relevant topics of the journal and arranges the peer review process. The editorial board offers a wide range of experts as reviewers and ensures that the reviewers and the authors don’t have any conflict of interest. For a more objective assessment reviewers receive the article without the author’s name: anonymous independent peer review (double-blind) is a common practice of the editorial office.

3.2. The reviewer evaluates the scientific level of the material. Comments do not relate to personal qualities of authors: unethical and offensive comments are not allowed.

3.3. If the reviewer does not consider him/herself competent enough for a justified conclusion, or is not capable to accomplish the work in time, (s)he should inform the editors about that.

3.4. Reviewers must not participate in considering a submission, if there is a conflict of interest (due concurrence, collaboration or any other interaction) with any of the authors, or organizations connected with the submitted paper.

3.5. The reviewers should identify significant published works on the topic of the submission that are not included in the list of references. Every already published statement (observation, conclusion, ot argument) should be provided with a reference. The reviewer should also inform the editors about any significant similarity or coincidence with another published work within the reviewer’s research area.

4. The editorial office, editorial board and their responsibility

4.1. The editorial board monitors compliance with publication ethics of the journal and ensures a high scientific quality of published papers.

4.2. The editorial board selects articles for publication in the journal and makes an informed decision of rejection or publication of the materials as a result of peer review process and collective discussion. Upon detection of errors and inaccuracies the editorial board requests the author to eliminate them, reserving the right to reject the material otherwise.

4.3. The editorial board and the editorial office preserve the anonymity of reviewers and don’t inform authors of the reviewers’ names.

4.4. The editorial office is committed to perform high quality editing of articles accepted for publication.

5. Publisher and their responsibility

5.1. Publisher must adopt policies and procedures that support editors, reviewers and authors in performing their ethical duties under these ethics guidelines. The publisher should ensure that the potential for advertising or reprint revenue has no impact or influence on editorial decisions.

5.2. Publisher must support journal editors in the review of complaints raised concerning ethical issues and help communications with other journals and/or publishers where this is useful to editors.

5.3. Publisher must develop codes of practice and inculcate industry standards for best practice on ethical matters, errors and retractions.

1. The text of the article must be submitted in Microsoft Word for Windows format (.doc or .docx) as well as in PDF format.

2. The recommended size of submitted research papers is 40 000–60 000 symbols. The recommended size of submitted review articles is 20 000–30 000 symbols.

3. Font size: 12, line spacing: 1,5.

4. The title of the article should be followed by the abstract (200-250 words) and keywords. The title and headings are given in bold.

5. The examples in the text are usually given in italics, and their translation in single quotes.

6. For emphasizing, 2 pt spacing, small caps, or bold is used, terms are highlighted by quotation marks (not italics).

7. Footnotes must be on the same page where the citation is given.

8. References inside the text are put in square brackets: [Aikhenvald 2004]. After the year of issue, a colon and page number(s) follow: [Aikhenvald 2004: 35], or [Aikhenvald 2004: 35–40], or [Aikhenvald 2004: 35, 45, 50], or [Haspelmath 2008: 23 ff.]. To avoid mistakes, the initials of the authors are specified: [Ch. Lehmann 1985; V. Lehmann 2004]. If several works by the same author for the same year are mentioned in the References, alphabetic specifications should be used: [Bailyn 1995a; 1995b].

1. The list of references is given at the end of the article and is arranged alphabetically. This list includes only the works mentioned in the text.

2. The references are presented as follows:

Name year — Last name, first name. The title of the monograph. City: Publisher, Year.

Name year — Last name, first name. The title of the article. The title of the journal, Year, No.: a range of pages.

Name year — Last name, first name. The title of the article. The title of the collection. Editor(s). City: Publisher, Year, a range of pages.

A “code” of the work should be presented in the beginning (last name, year of issue of the cited work). If there are more than two authors, it is permissible to mention only one author plus “et al.”. A “сode” of the collection or another similar publication may be the name of the editor(s) or the abbreviated name of the collection.

In the bibliography typed in Latin characters, all sources (titles of monographs, collections, and journals) should be italicized. Names of publishing houses are written with capitals. The words that are written with a capital letter according to the spelling rules of the corresponding language (e.g. names of languages in English) are also written with capitals. All sources in languages that use scripts other than Latin, Greek, or Cyrillic should be given in Latin transliteration.
